University of Waikato (c/o project manager, Greenstone Group)
The Bay of Plenty’s new University of Waikato campus in the heart of Tauranga city opened in March 2019. The landmark campus unites the University’s network of campuses in New Zealand’s fastest growing region. Designed to be vibrant and engaging, the four-level building features a range of innovative communal spaces, lecture theatres and multipurpose areas.
The highly visible central city site chosen for the new University of Waikato campus in Tauranga enabled it to be intentionally designed as a future landmark on the Tauranga CBD skyline. Positioned between Durham Street, Durham Lane and Spring Street, the sloping site was ideal for providing access to the multipurpose building from different levels. With key funding for the project provided by local organisations including the Tauranga City Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust, the objective was to provide a multipurpose facility that would drive and attract economic growth in the region.
Harrison Grierson was engaged by the project manager, the Greenstone Group, to provide preliminary, developed and detailed design services for the new campus. This included providing services for the building, stormwater designs, liaison with the City Council and Regional Council, supporting consent applications (Building and Resource Consents) and supporting procurement of physical work and construction supervision.
The project involved complicated solutions to accommodate existing services, geotechnical conditions and access requirements within very tight spaces. Through consultation with the professional project team and other affected parties and by introducing innovative design solutions, we were able to design and deliver cost effective and practical solutions for the new campus.
By keeping to a detailed and strict planning schedule and introducing innovative design solutions, Harrison Grierson contributed to a construction process that was conducted within budget and to a tight timeframe.
Today the new campus is considered a landmark in the Tauranga CBD. Enjoying positive publicity, it is actively contributing to the region’s continued growth.
