Auckland International Airport Ltd
Developing and implementing the vision of a large-scale landscape masterplan at Auckland Airport.
2014
$4 million
The Gateway along George Bolt Memorial Drive forms a stunning entrance to Auckland Airport and to the city of Auckland. It’s an expression of man and land, and celebrates the multiple histories of New Zealand’s landscape.
Our role was to develop and implement the vision of the overarching landscape masterplan designed by San Francisco-based Surfacedesign Inc.
Our landscape design and civil engineering teams developed carefully planned earthworks overlaid with hedgerows and grass planting, representing Maori stonefields and the greater Auckland landscape - both urban and volcanic.
Large earth banks rise to nine-metres in parts and serve a dual purpose as they address on-site soil remediation and stormwater treatment; part of a larger ecological mission of the Airport.
The distinctive landscape structures and simple planting scheme provides visual cohesiveness and low maintenance planting for large areas at the Airport.
The Gateway is an impressive entrance piece that visually connects the airport to the greater New Zealand ecology, history and culture. It introduces travellers to the landscape of the country, even from the sky above.
